7th Oct 2014
Today I made a start and machined the main cylinder block.
MAIN BLOCK
21st Oct 2014
Over the last couple of days I had chance to machine the port block together with the steam chest. Rather than use hexagon rod for the gland nut I chose to use some round rod.
I also managed to start soldering the port block to the main block.Over the last couple of days I had chance to machine the port block together with the steam chest. Rather than use hexagon rod for the gland nut I chose to use some round rod.
PORT BLOCK AND STEAM CHEST.
SOLDERED UP READY.
27th Oct 2014
Made some more progress this weekend. Machined both valves although there seemed to be a discrepancy between the written instructions and the exhaust cavity dimensions on the drawing. Next job is the piston assembly.
VALVES NOW MACHINED
CHASSIS SO FAR
20-2-2015 I have not updated this for some time but this is how the chassis looks. You can see the laser cut front and rear smoke box parts ready for assembly.
PART MADE BOILER
It's April and I have been busy trying to get as far as possible with this engine. This is where we are today. Please ignore picture date stamps as they're wrong.
It's now the beginning of September and a start has been made on the painting. The parts were cleaned thoroughly and a thin coat of UPOL etch primer applied and left overnight to dry before applying the red top coats of enamel by brush. All the black parts are just spray stove paint.
I also took the opportunity to make a poker style burner. Actually, I ended up making three as the burner went out after the smokebox door was closed!! Turned out the smokebox doesn't want to be airtight for this type of firing so I enlarged the exhaust hole in the bottom of the smokebox itself and voila no more burner problems!
BURNER
Well it's been a while since I did an update but Brazil is now finished and running well.
